Block 5: The Atmosphere: Structure and Temperature

The Air We Breathe

The Earth's atmosphere is a one-of-a-kind phenomenon. No other planet in the Solar System has the unique mixture of gases needed to support life as we know it. We define weather as the state of the air at a given time and place.

More precisely, weather is what's going on at a particular time and a local area. Climate is based on observations of weather over many years for a particular region. For instance, southern California can have a week of very heavy rain, but over a period of several years it is an arid and warm climate.
