Block 3: Ocean Water and Ocean Life

Life in the Salty Ocean

An ocean  is a body of saline (salty) water making up most of the Earth's hydrosphere. On Earth, an ocean is one of the major conventional divisions of the World Ocean.
The world ocean is the main component of Earth's hydrosphere, and is teeming with life.  The oceans contain over 230,000 known species, but because much of it is unexplored, the number of species that exist in the ocean is much larger, possibly over two million. The origin of Earth's oceans is unknown; oceans are thought to have formed in the Hadean eon and, according to evolutionary theory, may have been the cause for the emergence of life. The ocean may also be the richest source of food, minerals and other useful materials on Earth.
