Laboratory System


Your laboratory work in this course can be interesting and intriguing, especially if you decide to adopt the following characteristics.

  • Attend lab regularly and be on time
  • Do any pre-lab work or research assigned
  • Work carefully and safely
  • Take extensive notes on your work
  • Write your reports neatly and accurately
  • Make every effort to "get it," not just "get it done."


How it works.

You are required to attend at least one 2-hour block during each of those 2-week sessions, and complete the appropriate laboratory activity.

The dates of the sessions and the main point of emphasis for each session are listed below.

Jan. 28 - Feb. 7....................Earthquake Analysis and Emergency Preparedness

Mar. 11 - Mar. 21..................Meteorology, Weather, Climate & Microclimate

Apr. 29 - May 10..................The Solar System and Beyond

Before the first laboratory session... you need to see Mr. Hitchcock in Room 16 and sign up for a time during the first lab session. After session one you will sign up in the lab or in Room 16.

ASSIGNMENT:

1. The videos below each cover an important part of skills you need in order to be successful in lab. Watch each of the following videos. Write a summary of each of them, being sure to discuss the primary topic of each one. Include and highlight the most important vocabulary in the video.

Hands and Brain ON Assignment:

Joseph's parents enjoy analyzing the data of situations that are in constant change. When Joseph was born they measured his length at 21-inches. Each year after that, on his birthday, they measured his height. For the first 5 years, Joseph grew 4 inches per year. The next 4 years his growth rate decreased to 2-inches per year. From then until Joseph was 14, he grew at the original rate of 4 inches per year. From that age until the end of their data collection, the rate of growth was 6 inches every year.

A. You are to extract the data from the above description and display it in a table using the proper format for making a data table.

B. Using the information displayed in your table construct a graph using the technique described in the relevant video above.
