Without the sun, nothing matters!

Seems simple, but it's true. The sun provides ALL our energy. Without the sun the Earth becomes a dark, lifeless sphere traveling through the universe on a path to nowhere.

Another obvious aspect of studying the sun is rather important. We aren't going there! Neither are we landing any Mars-type rover on the surface.
